On the A406, about two months ago, a stone smashed my S204 C180's windscreen. Thought nothing of it because there was no obvious damage; however, a three-inch fissure had emerged by morning afterward.
When I needed a replacement windscreen, I contacted Aviva, who put me in touch with National Windscreens. I was willing to pay the extra money for authentic MB glass if that was what was required, but I did ask for Pilkington as an alternative aftermarket option.
Nonetheless, the insurance company finally rejected the OEM screen after more than eight weeks of delays. According to their logic,
(a) They'll only approve aftermarket glass if it's "as good as OEM," and (b) They won't create any exceptions if the vehicle is old.
The dealer even gave me a quote—just £235 + VAT—but they still wouldn't budge.
I have had nothing but positive experiences with the Northwest local branch. They've been forthright in saying that, should I go ahead with the replacement, the screen could come from any number of manufacturers, including Pilkington, Fuyao, XYG, or Shatterproof.
Even though it's a reasonable price and probably less expensive than the aftermarket version, the insurer is still refusing to approve the OEM at that price. I cannot understand it. How do you feel about Fuyao, XFG, and the like? I know Fuyao is an official BMW supplier, but would it be better to use their aftermarket option or to pay for an independent to have a dealer install an OEM windscreen?

Assuming they align the sensors, cameras, etc. properly, I have never been able to distinguish between OEM and aftermarket windscreens, and I've gone through a fair share of them.

Your response and personal knowledge of aftermarket windscreens are much appreciated.
Stone chips have never cracked my windscreen before, and my old S202 handled them with ease, so this is a bit frustrating.
I don't have a problem with going with either AGC or Pilkington because the windscreen, front passenger/driver and rear glass on the S204 are all MB products.
