Would you happen to know the most common way to upgrade the emissions system on a 2008 118d BMW? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Servicing is absent.
Please tell me when the air filter was last changed.
I was wondering if you gave it the Italian treatment before testing.

Along with your response, there are several other potential issues, such as spark plugs, tyres, faulty injectors at town traffic lights, short trips, fuel dilution (which is why the Italian tune-up was recommended), and... heavy pedal acceleration.

Since it is a diesel with no spark plugs, the only thing that matters is city driving. I appreciate your assistance.

I have replaced the aftermarket filter with a brand new original one. Thank you!

So, is this a stock vehicle, or has it had any modifications like remaps or DPF deletes?

The standard filter works just fine.
Once it's warm, hit it with a hammer.
I usually do this for about half a mile in a straight line near the MPT station, and it works particularly well with the 320d that my wife uses for our bingo runs and grocery shopping.
