What gives? Does anyone have any idea? There appears to be a yellow pedestrian detection:

1. It is reasonable to use the yellow crosswalks.

2. sometimes at crossroads—I don't know the logic or purpose behind this

Okay, it makes sense to do this when a pedestrian crossing sign is detected.

4. It appears to be completely oblivious to pedestrians who cross the street at random. Isn't this the reason it should be? How useful would that be? I thought this was how the system worked.

In all likelihood, it is a sign and not pedestrians that it is detecting, though I cannot say for sure. (or, more accurately, a series of signs).

To avoid collisions, I assume it is a component of pedestrian detection systems. In the other cases, it's about the recognition of traffic signs.
I think there's a lot of baby sitting going on, haha.

The frequency and seeming randomness with which it appears teaches your brain to ignore it.

By the way, the head-up display's speed limit warning is the car's worst feature. Most of the PSL where I live is between fifty and sixty kilometres per hour. Still, 80 kph is what the HTA (the law) specifies for rural areas. The RR will simply display "80" when it hasn't seen a sign for some time; when it does, it will update to reflect the current signal strength, which is 50, and it will return to the 80 level at its discretion.

A speeding ticket can be easily obtained in this manner.
