My granddaughter just bought a MINI Cooper from 2013. No problems, high mileage, and runs smoothly. I'm not satisfied, though, because I serviced it yesterday. The oil had clearly not been changed for a while; the oil filter, on the other hand, was really black with a scattering of brassy fragments. the drained sump oil isn't immediately apparent, though Considering the likelihood of metal loss, this cannot be a good bearing choice. No matter how much she loves the car, there is still a small warranty that we can use if she decides she doesn't want it. Does this engine seem like it will break down soon? The cost of the car, even if it's secondhand, will likely exceed the replacement cost.

Quite challenging. The vehicle is functioning normally with no obvious issues, as you pointed out, but oil contamination could be a sign of problems in the past or future. You may be able to take advantage of distance selling regulations if you made the purchase over the phone or online; alternatively, you may be subject to a cooling off period if you financed the purchase.
Even though it's tough and doesn't cover wear and tear, the Consumer Rights Act does provide you the right to have your vehicle repaired for six months if you can prove that the fault was there when you bought it. Which is pretty much what will happen with a used car with a lot of miles on it.
The option to have an oil analysis performed exists, and while it is intriguing, it is unlikely to provide any practical insights.
A high-mileage, thirteen-year-old Mini?
I would change the oil again in a couple of thousand miles and check the filter to see what's inside. Then I would decide if it's worth keeping or selling.

Your story is greatly appreciated. When other owners read reviews like this, they are much more likely to make an informed purchase. Before purchasing aftermarket parts or accessories, it is always beneficial to hear both the pros and cons.
