Hi there

Just joined the site and wondered if anyone had any recent experience of buying an old BGT to do up? Am considering it as a project but doing my research first!

Yes, though in my case i found a recently fully restored car which had suffered some subsequent accident damage. Mine had thousands spent on it by its previous owner only to be declared a total loss by a glancing blow on some armco at the side of the road because she had not taken out an agreed value policy.

So, rather than dealing with an unknown amount of rot the path back was very straightforward, front frame and rails straightened by a specialist then, wing, crossmember, steering rack, radiator and front panel. Im now assembling parts for a V8 conversion.

Hey there! Just wondering - did you ever get round to starting/finishing this little project? If so I'd love to see some pictures!!
Considering doing something similar myself....

Hi there.
Yes, last October I bought a 1972 MGBGT on ebay. It was a non runner, no MOT and had been stored for a few years. Had it trailered down, put in a new battery, new plugs and leads and fitted a choke cable which was missing and lo and behold it started. I thought I would put it in for a quick MOT which would highlight all the bits I needed to do and unbelievably it only failed on two things: horn not working and the headlight were out of alignment. Fixed those quick and I had a running MOT'd MGBGT for £1700.
Luckily the body and mechanics are solid, though the paintwork and interior are very shabby so am spending a lot of time bringing it back to a nice original condition. I'm not going for a show car but something original that drives well.
Overall really glad I took the risk.
